Andy Murray best British player everAndy Murray won Sunday the Rogers Cup in Montreal and moved to the 2nd place in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings. Murray is currently placed ahead of Rafael Nadal and just behind the 2009 US Open champion, Roger Federer. Murray occupied the 3rd place in the 2009 ATP rankings since 11 May 2009.

Roger Federer has 11,040 points from 16 tournaments played, Andy Murray has 9,250 points earned in 18 tournaments and Rafael Nadal cumulated just 8,665 points in 16 tournaments.

The 22 year old tennis player makes history being the first player other than Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to be ranked No. 2 since Australian Lleyton Hewitt on 2005. Murray is the 12th player in the history of the ATP World Tour Rankings (created in 1973) to reach a career-high No. 2.

Andy Murray is the first player to win 50 matches (50-7) in 2009 and just this year won five ATP World Tour titles. He won 13 singles trophies and played as a runner-up in 6 ATP World Tour Finals in his professional tennis career.

Murray plays better on fast surfaces (such as hard courts), but since 2008 he worked hard on improving his clay court game. His main coach now is Miles Maclagan but he was previously coached by American Brad Gilbert, who coached former World No. 1 players Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick.

Regarding Andy Murray’s career Ladbrokes prepared some special bets. The odds for the 1st Grand Slam Andy Murray to win are for US Open 2.50 and Australian Open 3.50, while chances never to win a Grand Slam are 7 to 1. At the same bookmaker the chance Andy Murray to become world number 1 by December 31st 2009 is 5 to 1.

Monday, 17August started the 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati which gathers seven of the top ten players of the world. Roger Federer, the World No. 1, new No. 2 Andy Murray, No. 3 Rafael Nadal, No. 4 Novak Djokovic and No. 5 Andy Roddick, will all be playing Wednesday 19 August.

Roger Federer (1.02) and Andy Murray (1.03) are the two favorites on winning the Cincinnati Masters. Federer won the Cincinnati Masters in 2005 and 2007 while Andy Murray is defending his last year champion title so the tournament will be very interesting to follow, maybe we’ll see another Federer vs. Murray final.
